Blodtransfusjon skal ikke gis dersom andre behandlingsalternativer finnes. Pasienter med jernmangelanemi som er hemodynamisk stabile bør få jerntilskudd. Behandling av jernmangelanemi før en planlagt operasjon minsker risikoen for at transfusjon blir nødvendig.
